Promising Solutions to the Problem of Reducing Teenagers’ Reader Interest

The decrease in socio-cultural status of reading and its displacement from the sphere of free time is taking on significant proportions. The purpose of the study is to analyze and display the real picture of reading, in particular teenagers’ one, as well as to identify the possibilities and most promising library projects in the support and development of reading. Special attention in the study of this problem is given to reading in childhood and teenagers (7–15 years), since it is during this period that worldview and mortal guidelines are formed.

The article describes some aspects of libraries work to promote the national book heritage. It examines the book culture as a special phenomenon that ensures preservation of intellectual and spiritual traditions of the past and determines their adaptation to the system of modern communications, since the book was highly appreciated at all times and among all peoples as a monument of spiritual and material culture.

With the development of digitalization, new services are emerging that allow attracting users to libraries, personalizing services and automating processes of their comfortable provision, etc. In the context of transformation, libraries have to adapt to new realities, but at the same time, new opportunities appear every day to improve their work in the digital space. Many libraries today lack any clear strategy for working in the virtual space and do not investigate feedback from consumers.

The missionary activities within the cultural life of Kazan region was related to book production, distribution and use. The authors focus on the book missions and, in particular, on the contribution of St. Gurias Brotherhood Translator Commission to publishing translated missionary books in Russia’s native languages. They analyze the repertoire of missionary books published by St. Gurias Brotherhood in 1867–1915 categorized by target regions and related strategy of translations of religious, secular, popular and educational literature into the languages of the Russian Empire.

The special competencies of a teacher at a higher library school are dif- ferentiated into actual pedagogical (methodological) and knowledge of library technology. In recent decades, the technology of working with documents and readers has been reduced in favor of activities such as marketing and manage- ment. In recent years, theorists and practitioners of librarianship have been unanimous in the opinion that the lack of such qualifications in the nomencla- ture of library positions has a negative impact on the status of young specialists and their retention in the library.
