Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge through Libraries in African Countries

The dissemination of scientific knowledge in society is an important vector of work of all social institutions. The library, as one of the leading cultural institutions, takes on this function and implements it through its work with readers. This article examines libraries activities to disseminate scientific knowledge in African countries. This article presents the results of a study of accessible library websites in Africa. The LENS.ORG platform ( https://www.lens.org/ ) was used to search for literary sources.

Today, the government pays special attention to science and science popularization. This includes legal regulation, in particular, and makes the focus of the humanities scholars. However, the issues of the origins of science education of the community, including via the librarianship, are understudied. The goal of this study is to reveal and analyze the legislative acts on non-formal education regulations adopted in 1725–1917. The study focused on the documents comprising definitions related to the science popularization in its modern sense.

At present, the problem of history of the State policy for the promotion of science is of interest to many scientists. However, the features of the origin and formation of the domestic legislation in the sphere of popular scientific knowledge promotion through libraries are not enough studied. The purpose of the study was to identify and analyze the most significant legal documents in the field of science and technology popularization, including those addressed to libraries. The source base was an amount of legislative acts from 1917 to 1941.

Avenues for artificial intelligence in library and information services

The author discusses the key concepts of the artificial intelligence, computerized analysis and machine learning. The chatbots СhatGPT, GigaChat, Alisa can be used in the libraries and information centers to assist in translations of foreign publications, article reviewing, etc. The author examines the possibility of integrating chatbot into the websites to render the first assistance to the users, in particular beyond office hours. The author reviews using AI for literature system reviewing and argues that the selection process is more efficient, and time is saved.

The structure of scientific process adapting to the open science concept has been intensively changing. The libraries and librarians are to be the key actors in this process. Within the scope and differentiation of librarian and bibliographer competences for open science support, the competences may be divided into several key vectors: methodological support, analysis, and popularization of open science.

The authors discuss the findings of the study “Popular science books in Russian libraries”. The purpose of the study was to get data on the existence, quantity and relevancy of these publications in the libraries. The authors cite the results of the survey and provide their conclusions on the libraries’ managing their popular science collections and related user services. The digital survey was based on Yandex Forms service and comprised quantitative data acquisition and analysis.

The objective of the article is to present the results of a study of scientists’ attitude to communication between science and society by means of libraries. The working method of the study was an online questionnaire of academic specialists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) research institutes. Data collection took place in early 2023.

Selected Bibliographic Resources for the Promotion of Scientific Knowledge on the Websites of Libraries in Russia

The purpose of the article is to show the results of a study of selected bibliographic resources in Russian libraries for the popularization of science, the promotion of scientific knowledge, the formation of a scientific worldview and the development of scientific literacy. Selected bibliographic resources on 87 library sites were considered. 750 selected bibliographic resources were identified, of which 280 (27 %) are aimed at disseminating modern scientific knowledge. Most of these are non-renewable resources.

The National Library Association “Libraries of the Future” (NALF) supported through the RF Presidential Grant for Civil Society Development approved by the Presidential Grants Foundation, has been implementing the All-Russian Scientific and Educational Project “The Kids Nobel”. The Project main goals are to promote scientific knowledge and to engage 7–8 grade students in urban and rural settlements in research. At this stage, four pilot RF subjects are selected, namely Arkhangelsk, Kaluga, Ryazan and Saratov regions.
