The purpose of this paper is, basing on the survey outcome of executives of libraries of research institutions under the scientific and methodological guidance of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, to measure their attitudes towards promoting scientific knowledge in society and libraries engagement in it. The pertinence of the topic is related to the change in attitude to the educational function implementation in libraries and is very current when, firstly, the state authorities focus more on scientific and technical libraries, secondly, the communication of science and society is intensively reinforced, and thirdly, libraries keep on looking for new forms of interaction with their users. Ways and means, and activity of the scientific and educational function implementation are closely related to libraries types. Processing of online questionnaire data has determined that over half of the libraries participate in the promotion of scientific knowledge, including with support from scientific institutions and/or jointly with them. Some libraries provide popular science and educational events not only upon institutions requests, but on their own initiative. The most frequent lines of library action in this area encompass exhibitions, museum work, digital information products, various formats of scientific and educational activities. Moreover, the main reasons are identified why a number of libraries are unable of performing the scientific and educational function, and the benefits of libraries’ involving in the promotion of science are also listed.
