The Library as a Social Institution for Organizing Science and Society Interaction (Based on the Materials of Historical Science)

Basing on the materials of historical science, the analysis of the organization of library interaction between science and society is given. It is noted, that the effectiveness of the development of historical self-awareness and worldview is due not only to the state of historical science, but also the organization of interaction between science and society, especially the interpretation of key events in the history of our country, which are the subject of disputes leading to discord in modern Russian society.

Soviet Library Policy on the Organization of Interaction between Science and Society in the 1920s–1930s

The purpose of the article is a critical analysis of the historical experience of forming the educational Soviet state library policy in the 1920s and 1930s and determination of the possibilities of its modern use. It is shown that the basis of this policy were the views of the domestic revolutionary democrats on science and its popularization, as well as V. I. Lenin’s ideas about the political education of the working class and the development of its political consciousness.

The article is a response to the article by V. K. Stepanov “A great reduction in quantity of libraries: particular management errors or a general perspective for the field (analysis of the experience of the Moscow region)”, published in the previous issue of Bibliosphere. Three main theoretical and methodological contradictions that reduce the reliability of the results obtained by the author and the validity of the recommendations proposed by him for regional librarianship are identified and analyzed.

The State-Oriented Soviet Model of Library Support for Communication between Science and Society

It is devoted to the history of the formation of the activities of Soviet libraries on communication between society and science. It is proposed to single out the state-oriented service model, which was formed in Soviet times as a tool of social management through political and scientific and technical education. The goals of the enlightenment were to involve the population in the construction of a new socialist society, industrial in nature. Technologically, this was realized during the library reading of specially selected scientific and popular science literature.
