Natural biologically active substances from plants are promising stimulants or inhibitors of various physiological conditions in animals and humans. Bittersweet (Celastrus L.) is a large liana that produces a significant amount of leaves, a rapidly growing renewable source of raw materials. The medicinal properties of Celastrus are currently poorly understood, and its medical use is limited to traditional use in Asia and North America.

The genus Celastrus L. (bittersweets) includes about 35 species of woody lianas, growing in Australia, Madagascar, America and Asia, including Russian Far East. Some species, used in Russia and abroad for vertical gardening are not only decorative, but partially edible and even medicinal. The content of biologically active compounds in the leaves and other structures of bittersweets has been studied fragmentarily. Cyclitol, catechins, and glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin were found in plants.

This article is the author’s answer to the critical response of E. A. Pleshkevich on an article devoted to reducing the quantity of libraries in the Moscow region. Reasoned answers are given to the opponent’s three key objections. The point of view on the initial cause of the crisis in librarianship, which is the transfer of information flows to the digital sphere, is confirmed and specified. E. A. Pleshkevich’s understanding of the nature of the library as a public institution designed to guide reading is refuted.

The article is a response to the article by V. K. Stepanov “A great reduction in quantity of libraries: particular management errors or a general perspective for the field (analysis of the experience of the Moscow region)”, published in the previous issue of Bibliosphere. Three main theoretical and methodological contradictions that reduce the reliability of the results obtained by the author and the validity of the recommendations proposed by him for regional librarianship are identified and analyzed.

The number of libraries around the world and in Russia continues to decline. The regularity of the situation is explained by the loss of real demand for traditional library services – the actual library attendance is rapidly declining. The founders, represented by local regional and municipal administrations, feeling the decline in the role of libraries, are gradually reducing their scale and number. The Moscow region became the Russian leader in 2021 in closing libraries: it liquidated 26 libraries. The closure was initiated by the local Ministry of culture.
