In the recent decade, the interest in popular science seminars, lectures and master classes has been growing, which is evidenced by the specialists of libraries, museums and educational organizations. The authors argue that the dialogue between science and society should be enhanced, and it is important to attract public attention to the achievements in science and technology and to cultivate learning interest.

The purpose of the article is a critical analysis of the historical experience of forming the educational Soviet state library policy in the 1920s and 1930s and determination of the possibilities of its modern use. It is shown that the basis of this policy were the views of the domestic revolutionary democrats on science and its popularization, as well as V. I. Lenin’s ideas about the political education of the working class and the development of its political consciousness.

The paper is devoted to the problem of the appropriateness of using the notion «public opinion» in connection with the Greek society and possibility of the ancient theater to affect on the public opinion. After examination of the notion «public opinion», the author concludes that the structuring elements of public opinion are a common source of information and a common field of communication. In that sense public opinion do not correspond with the Greek notion «opinion of the many».

Based on the communicative and structural approaches, the author discusses the status of the term “visual sources in rare books of science” and related terms, as well as the visual sources classification and role in the rare books of science. The analysis, synthesis, systemic, structural, axiomatic, modelling and typology methods, as well as generalization and classification are applied. The visual sources make the subject of the study. Presenting visual sources in research works is a research method: the images are “to reveal” the textual component.
