The authors review the work of the Fifth Scientific and Practical Conference “The letter and digit: The libraries on the way to digitalization” (“BiblioPiter2024”) held on April 9–11, 2024. The conference subject scope comprised the following topics: The role of libraries in information support of science and education; training staff for specialized, academic and public libraries; AI tools development and use in education; status of and prospects for modern information, computer and Internet-based technologies in library practice; modern library functional transformation.

The author examines e-libraries as a subdivision of the new discipline of e-librarianship. The e-libraries as a particular subject of the library information environment emerged in 1990s, and in the mid-decade, the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology (RNPLS&T) introduced its first e-collections. In 2020–2022, within the framework of the new research theme “Electronic Librarianship”, the RNPLS&T was developing the subjects of e-librarianship entity and definition, as well as of the terminological system.

In his annual report to the Seventh World Professional Forum “SOCHI–2023”, the author analyzes the status and trends of main technological aspects of modern library services and functions. He characterizes the digital transformation components that dynamically influence technological and behavioral models of modern libraries, e. g. artificial intellect (AI), neural networks, copyright laws, information market transformation, and foreign software import substitution. He gives his opinion on the role of the above-mentioned components in the library information practice.

The Russian publishing market is analyzed from the library’ perspective, as the book publishing and book distribution market dynamics, including both book publishing and trends in distributing in different formats through various channels and technologies, affect significantly library collection development. The following problems are indicated: 1) completeness and accessibility of information on scientific literature being published; 2) procurability. The analysis is based on the statistical data by Russian Book Chamber, sector-specific report “The Russian Book Market”, etc.

The article is published on the jubilee of Yakov Leonidovich Shrayberg, prominent Russian library scientist. The most important episodes of his professional activities of the recent decade are discussed: establishing of the National Association “Libraries of the Future”, his change-over to the position of RNPLS&T Director for Research, publishing of the three-volume book “My friend Katya Genieva”, etc.
