Our contemporary Arkady Vasilyevich Sokolov (1934–2023) specialized in many disciplines within the documentology sphere, namely library science, bibliography, informatics, noocommunicology, etc., and documentology, in particular. The author focuses on this aspect of Sokolov’s work. His interest in documentology raised naturally from informatics, with his starting point in 1962. Professionally engaged in information search, Sokolov explored the nature of information, which finally culminated in the monograph “The philosophy of information” in 2010.

Scientific knowledge propagation is among the key functions of the Common Scientific Knowledge Digital Space (CSKDS), and the virtual exhibitions (VE) as an efficient instrument enable to accumulate heterogeneous scientific information on phenomena, events or scholars. The authors discuss the general issues and principles of VE organization, content selection, VE structure and main sections. Three VE types are specified, namely autonomous, remote and combined VE. Selection and content structuration methods are proposed for each of the types.

The missionary activities within the cultural life of Kazan region was related to book production, distribution and use. The authors focus on the book missions and, in particular, on the contribution of St. Gurias Brotherhood Translator Commission to publishing translated missionary books in Russia’s native languages. They analyze the repertoire of missionary books published by St. Gurias Brotherhood in 1867–1915 categorized by target regions and related strategy of translations of religious, secular, popular and educational literature into the languages of the Russian Empire.

The author focuses on the book charity drives to support the libraries in Donetsk and Lugansk republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, and examines the contribution of state and non-government organizations. The experience of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) in restoration of the libraries in cleared areas and the possibilities to use this experience today, is explored. The need for coordination center for developing collections in the new territories is substantiated. The challenges of these libraries’ entering the RF digital space are discussed.
