The accessibility of scientific information offers almost infinite possibilities for bolstering science status and prestige in the eyes of the widest population. The author discusses the popular approaches to science popularization, key models of scientific communication and related problems. When assessing the demand for scientific knowledge, the science communicators report on the “popularization boom”, on one hand, and on the relatively low awareness of Russian citizens of the current state of Russian science.

The theme of ecology, traditional for the Forum “The Book. Culture. Education. Innovations”, was discussed at the Conference “Green libraries – libraries of the future” (before 2024 – Conference on the current issues of ecological education). The conference program was built around the topic of libraries contribution to ecological education and sustainable development, modern creative approaches, and libraries integration into the creative economy. The theme of the year was: “The green libraries: Eternal values and new trends. Art technologies for libraries of the future”.

What the library in the future will look like? What the modern library has to be to have a future? To answer these questions, we are to imagine the library of the future based on modern realty and prospects for social advancement. Today, the concept of “green libraries” as the libraries of the future has become increasingly popular in the world. The researchers discuss enthusiastically and conceptualize the key ideas and characteristics of “green libraries”. The article logically breaks up into two parts.

The reviews of library ecological activities have been regularly published in the Scientific and Technical Libraries journal since 2002. The author discusses the 4-th conference on the current problems of ecological education ”Ecological information and ecological culture”. Analyzing the prospects for computerized article abstracting as a case study of RNPLS&T’s database “Ecology: Science and technology”

The authors examine the possibility of computerized abstracting of publications based on generative abstracting models. They review the approaches toward automatic control including that of neural networks, characterize popular software environments, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages for computerized abstracting. The problems under discussion are relevant as the technology of computerized abstracting increases the accessibility of publications, in particular, those out of the open access while decreases bibliographic processing costs.

Among the other IFLA sections and thematic groups, IFLA Environment, Sustainability and Libraries Section (ENSULIB) is in the thick of sustainability problems and, in particular, of ecological component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). ENSULIB encourages the libraries to inspire their communities for the ecologically sustainable course of action through providing materials on “green” librarianship, giving the floor to “green” librarians and library projects, by taking the lead and propounding the discussion.

Applying thesauruses in expanding user search queries: From local use to linked data

The subject search in natural languages is the most difficult one due to phraseological ambiguities. To solve the problem, the information systems mobilize the terms in controlled dictionaries, e. g. thesauruses. The authors examine the classifications, thesauruses, subject headings, normative (authority) files within the context of the open networked space of the Linked Open Data environment (LOD). These links enable to enhance (complement) user queries with the words from other dictionaries, and to navigate through the other libraries’ systems for the resources.
