Development of documentology methodology: On the need to streamline term formation in document and information sciences

Prof. Yury N. Stolyarov’s contribution to the development of terminology and conceptual framework of document and information sciences is emphasized. Yury Stolyarov stood at the origins of documentology; however, there is still the need for intensive development of the discipline methodology. We have to understand the conventionality of scientific constructs at the theoretical (supra-empirical) level of research as the variability in building of theoretical schemes models, conceptual frameworks, and concept naming.

Developing the general intertheory of documentology

The author examines the current status of documentology. The difference between documentary, ontological and theoretical knowledge is explained as related to the sciences of documentary information, and development of documentology is discussed through the lens of the theory of the structure of scientific knowledge. Based on the logical typology of cognition objects as subjects of thought, the just identifications of subjects of thought and concepts related to information units denoted by the term “document” and related terms, are offered.

The purpose of the article is to introduce new approach to explicate the term of «book». It implicates inter- and transdisciplinary study of accumulated knowledge on the book theory, combined basic schemes and terminological systems in the book theory, documentology and related areas, identification of conflicts and their elimination. The author suggests to use widely the documentoriented terms introduced by Yury N. Stolyarov and Galina N.
