The article deals with the problem of applying terms of the library local studies in practice. The essence is that lots of concepts, according to the author’s view, do not meet modern trends of social-economic development of the territory, it complicates the process of forming the regional documents collection in libraries. It is supposed to complete the conceptual row of the topic with more precise definitions and to introduce them into the lexicon of librarians-practitioners, it’s the article objective.
The role of academician N. K. Nikolsky as the Chairman of the Permanent library Commission of the RAS and simultaneously the Director of the Library of the Academy of Sciences (1920–1925) is traced on the basis of archival materials and published literature.
In this article some ornamented gospels belonged to Tikhomirov's collection of Rare Book Department of State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the RAS are considered, their decoration are analyzed.

Article is devoted to the history of the origin and development of libraries in parish schools of Kostroma province in the late XIX - early XX сentury about which there were no publications in professional publications earlier. The author analyzes the qualitative and quantitative structure of library funds, reveals necessity and influence of libraries on pupils and adult population in the province.
The review is given of the viewpoints on the modern understanding of comparativistics and factors, actualizing such type of investigations. Its subject and main investigation methods are considered. The author analyses most notable international investigations and indicators in the field of education, culture, library activity adopted by the international community. They allow to make comparative investigations in all these directions. The logic of a modern comparative investigation is shown.
