Robert Darnton’s communication circuit model, initially developed to analyze book publishing practices between 1500 and 1800, has long served as a key instrument in numerous historical book and media studies, enabling a comprehensive examination of the interactions among authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers in the historical context.
The paper is devoted to the problems of improving the system of training and expertise of scientific personnel in the field of library and information sciences. The relevance is due to the decrease in the quality of dissertation research in library science, bibliography and book studies due to the insufficient readiness of young scientific personnel for research activities.

Many scholars point to the crisis in the Russian bibliology. Meanwhile, those involved in the discussion specify the origins of the crisis in the discipline differently. One possible way to overcome the theoretical crisis of bibliology is to turn to Robert Darnton’s conceptual model of communications circuit. Robert Darnton is well known for his studies in the history of book culture of the modern era yet his model, which has long been recognized as a classic in international historical book studies, has been ignored by Russian bibliologists.
The author reviews the two editions (2021, 2023) of the multi-authored monograph “Scientific research in libraries: Subject scope, organization, presentation of findings” [in Russian]. The monograph is prepared by three national libraries – the Russian State Library, the National Library of Russia and the Presidential Library named after B. N. Yeltsin. The first edition has already won a high a ppraisal in the professional scientific media.
The problems of national bibliography and publishing statistics are inextricably linked to the legislative support of acquiring and processing mandatory copies (MC) of Russian publications by the coordinating national center. Over a century, the Russian Book Chamber has been such center (in USSR, later in the Russian Federation). It acted as an independent organization until 2014. From 2014 till September 2022, it was affiliated with ITAR-TASS news agency.
The Book and Graphics Section of St. Petersburg Scientists House of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the oldest bibliophile club of the country, which draws to itself attention not only domestic, but also foreign researchers in bibliology nowadays. Besides research and educational activity the Section carried on and is carrying exhibition and publishing activity. More than two hundred exhibitions have been held, more than fifty editions reflecting its member activity have been prepared during its existence.
