Artificial intelligence for the reconstruction of lost documents

The authors examine the AI capabilities in the process of the reconstruction of lost historical sources, e. g. documents, manuscripts, or photo materials. They offer the examples of neural networks (ChatGPT, Perplexity) processing images and texts. The purposes of the study are to analyze literature on AI utilization in restoration and archives; classification of software solutions for restoration of texts and images; analyzing practical experience of photos and documents reconstruction with neural networks.

Model for Organizing Processes in the Digital Educational Environment of Continuing Professional Education in the Library and Information Field

The author emphasizes the demand for and potential of the higher library education in the context of societal system transformation, scientific and IT revolutions, new status of socio-humanitarian knowledge, and library activity specific character. The author suggests that the synergetic model of integrated world cognition forms must become the fundamental paradigm of socio-humanitarian education.

Theoretical knowledge to eliminate terminological difficulties in the library science

In his several recent articles, Yury N. Stolyarov has formulated strategic tasks for the library science, in particular, to update urgently the definition of “the library” in official documents with the focus on library activities as a social good. In this connection, the author argues that theoretical knowledge has to be developed in librarianship to develop essentially unambiguous terminology. The system approach proves to be efficient for formulating key concepts in the library science.

Many researchers find it difficult to choose standards for their bibliographies and references. Therefore, the publishers often have to make the bibliographical descriptions over, depending on the entry purpose. In fact, two standards regulate the bibliography and references presentation today, which is the origin of concern of the authors, publishers, and librarians. The authors review the literature on this problem. They analyze the terminology and instructions on how to apply and draw the book bibliography up.

The author examines application of the retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology to bibliographic processing of large unstructured philosophical texts as exemplified by Alexey S. Khomyakov’s “Semiramis”. She describes the principles of RAG system operation based on text semantic analysis and vector indexing that enables to extract relevant fragments promptly. The author also focuses on the challenges of processing “Semiramis”, hard-to-analyze threevolume uncompleted work without distinct topical structure.

The libraries as world heritage objects: Analysis of practices and the strategies for nominating Russian library institutions

The author examines the problems of representation of libraries as objects on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Based on the extant practice analysis, he identifies 39 objects where the libraries make part of architectural and/or historical complex, and points to successful typologies and recognition criteria. The author develops the targeted nomination strategies for Russian library institutions. He argues, in particular, that the RNPLS&T meets several UNESCO criteria, e. g. unique library technologies and prominent architectural and functional organization.
