П. А. Ореховский The paper examines the «overproduction of scientists» and the related crisis of the Institute of science. Since scientism acted as the main civic religion that gives legitimacy to modern rich states, along with the loss of public confi dence in scientists, a crisis of legitimacy of modern political regimes arises. Th e loss of the former ethos of the scientifi c community does not allow solving this problem by simply increasing funding. In the absence of understanding the patterns of the evolution of scientifi c knowledge, scientometrics contributes to the decline of science. Religious institutions have experienced decline and subsequent revival more than once, and this is the fi rst time this situation has developed for Scientism. The consequences cannot be predicted. Given the level of higher education in rich societies, it is possible that science will completely dissolve into the private and public sectors, as well as the emergence of a new scientifi c ethos among a relatively small social group of «new» scientists with the prospect of a subsequent renaissance of scientism.
