The purpose of the paper is to characterize the main stages of the development of higher library education in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on the example of the Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts. A brief description of educational programs implemented at the institute since 2001 is given, as well as an assessment, based on statistical data, of the provision of public libraries in Yakutia with specialists with higher library education. The article also emphasizes the contribution of the National Library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) to the development of higher library education in the republic. Considerable attention is paid to the present stage and prospects of higher library education in the republic from the perspective of “Development Strategy of Librarianship in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) until 2032" and the federal program "Priority – 2030. The Far East”. New bachelor and master degree programs are characterized, and a list of basic competencies, being formed as a result of their implementation is proposed. Special attention is paid to the competencies required by library specialists on the market of information and cultural and educational services in the context of the creative economy. The authors dwell upon the current problems of training library specialists in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and propose ways to solve them.
