“New Atlantis” – a technocratic utopia?

The paper brings the analysis of the peculiar features of Bacon’s utopianism, it’s linkage to and tensions with classical utopias, technocratic ideas, Christian humanism and Hobbesian ethics. The research is trying to revisit conventional views on the so-called Bacon’s technocratic perspective for the future of science, state and society. We argue that ethical framework of Bacon’s theory of science and it’s societal institutions has much in common with the Kenotic ethics of Christian humanism. His utopian novel follows this ethical pattern as well.

The Philosophical Roots of the Ideology of the New Equality

The United States is traditionally perceived as a country dominated by liberal individualism. However, recently there has been a rise in the ideology of new equality. It presupposes the interpretation of the ideal of equality as equality of results, and in the collectivist dimension, i.e. as equality between some significant social groups, which is achieved through positive discrimination. This ideology received its philosophical justification in the left-liberal versions of the theory of justice - liberal egalitarianism and communitarianism.
