The methodology of history determines what the authors will write in their books. The methodology of history is a subject of social philosophy. However, after analyzing the leading works printed before 1955 on the history of the Urals and Siberia of the 17 th century we came to the conclusion that historians did not mechanically illustrate the conclusions of social philosophy. At the end of the 19 th century V. I. Lenin, relying on Karl Marx, drew a conception of the «new period of Russian history». In the 1930s this scheme has become mandatory for all Russian historians.

The Controversy with Immanuel Wallerstein: the Industrial Revolution and Globalization as the Great Turning Points of Modern Times

Wallerstein states that the only social revolution, or the «great turning point» of Modern Times, is the formation of the European capitalist world–economy during the «long» XVI century. Contrary to this, the author argues that two more great fractures can be distinguished in the history of Modern Times. The first of them was the industrial revolution of the XIX century, when three processes coincided, provoked by the invention of the steam engine – the mechanization of factory production, the energy revolution and the change of logistics.

Marxism and the theory of post-industrial society are two competing but largely similar approaches to the interpretation of social development. The emergence of the hypothesis of the transition to a new, post-industrial stage of history was a challenge for Marxist theorists. They responded with a series of arguments, more or less valid, attempting to refute the main tenets of the competing theory. By now, the dispute is not over. However, it became clear that the key points of both approaches needed further justification.
