The data regarding the development of information technologies, the growth of information resources, the formation of information society in Russia. We consider the main trends of development of the Internet, using services provided by a global network of Russia's segment of the network - Runet. It is noted that in a competitive environment («Library - Internet») should review existing approaches to not only to the forms and methods of work, but also to the mission of libraries in general, given the current capabilities of information resources and technologies.
